The Azure Window in Dwejra, Gozo collapsed earlier this morning.
The Azure Window was a natural limestone flat-topped arch spanning the sea at Dwejra. This natural wonder was created thousands of years ago when two limestone caves collapsed. It could be seen from land as well as from the sea. It was a popular tourist destination, for swimming and diving. Many of our trainees had visited this majestic landmark during their stay with us.
In recent years it became notorious with thrill seekers, using it as a site for illegal cliff diving.
The arch had been slowly disintegrating; many thought its complete demise was inevitable whilst others thought it could be saved. An action group tasked with safeguarding the Azure Window had tried to implement various strategies including notice boards warning people not to climb or walk on the Azure Window.
This iconic landmark had been featured in many films and TV series, such as The Game of Thrones, The Odyssey and The Count of Monte Cristo.
